2017-2018 Blackburn House Cohort

Meet the 2017-2018 Cohort!

Tomas Robles

tomas-e1513109840657.jpgMy name is Carlos Tomas Robles. I am 21 years old and was born and raised in Boone, North Carolina. I am from Bradford Trailer Park and I lived there til I was about 17 years old. I moved out for probably a year and I moved back in at the age of 18 roughly to live with JB Beyer.  I want to be a paramedic / EMT and I am a leader of a youth group in Bradford. I believe that everyone that lives in Bradford has an equal opportunity to receive God’s love and grace. From living in the trailer park I know that Jesus doesn’t love them any less because they don’t have money or because they’re poor.  Most white Christians will say trailer parks are dirty or that they are just not a place where you can raise a family. I find that really hard to believe because I know that it may not be the ideal living situation, but I have never known such a better Community growing up as a child–it’s a place where you can walk into someone else’s house and if you needed food they would gladly feed you or if you didn’t have the right clothes as a kid they would give you know their hand-me-downs. I will be continuing my ministry in Bradford in addition to other service opportunities while I am a Blackburn House resident this year.

Lisa Huffman

lisaI’m Lisa Huffman, and I have spent my time growing and maturing throughout the Carolinas! This state’s cooperative spirit, creative vibe, and foundational generosity made early impressions on me. I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Religion and Political Science from Furman University where I spent formative years, made friends and benefited from advice of dedicated teachers and mentors. At Furman, I was active in the Exploration of Vocation and Ministry program facilitated by the university chaplaincy.  The EVM program encouraged me to view career as “vocation” and added faithful meaning to my work. I have served in several ministry internships where I was given the freedom to question and explore calling and in addition, I’ve served in children’s ministry areas at Maple Springs UMC. My recent employment was with Crossnore School and Children’s Home. I am pursuing my Master of Divinity with Union Presbyterian Seminary, Methodist paradigm, in Charlotte, NC.

Caitlin McVay

caitlinHello friends! I feel so blessed to be considered a part of this community for a short time. My name is Caitlin McVay and I am proud to be from Fairview, NC just outside of Asheville. I graduated from Appalachian State University with a BS in Recreation Management and a minor in Religious Studies. I love to splash around in God’s amazing creation, hike to amazing summits, harmonize ‘til my voice is hoarse, read a book, go contra dancing, stare at the moon, love on giraffes, have real conversations, and most of all love on all the people I am blessed to cross paths with. I can’t wait to start this new journey with all of you!

Jeremiah Stanton-Rich – Blackburn House 2nd-year Fellow

jeremiah-stanton-richMy name is Jeremiah Stanton-Rich. I am 23 years old. I graduated Appalachian State University in May of 2016 with a BA in Sociology and a minor in Mathematics. Over the years I have worked for a variety of ministries including youth programs, backpacking ministries, and I was even part of the Blackburn House cohort of 2016-2017. I loved my time so much in Todd that I decided to stay on for at least one more year of ministry here. I’m thankful to all of you who made last year such an amazing year and I can’t wait to strengthen these existing relationships.

Partner with Tomas, Lisa, Caitlin, Jeremiah this year:
